The pH Increaser

Leisure Time Liquid Spa Up (Potassium Carbonate) is used to raise the pH of spa and hot tub water. It is important to maintain the pH between 7.2 and 7.8. Testing your pH is easy and can also be done with any number of kits or test strips.

pH is a measure of how acidic your water is on a scale from 0 to 14. A 7.0 pH is neutral, but anything below 7.0pH i
s neutral, but anything below 7.0 pH is considered acidic and can damage your equipment and the surface of your hot tub or spa.

Anything above 7.0 pH is considered “basic” and can cause minerals to “drop” out of solutions leaving deposits on your equipment and the surface of your spa. The accepted rule of thumb for your safety and comfort is maintaining a pH in the range of 7.2 to 7.8.

Total Alkalinity: Your hot tub’s total alkalinity is based on the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates, more commonly called “buffers”, found in your water. At the right levels, these “buffers” help maintain your hot tub/spas total alkalinity between 80 to 120 ppm and helps avoid sudden or drastic changes in pH levels, more commonly known as pH bounce.

Most water supplies fall within the 80 to 120 ppm range which means you should only have to adjust your alkalinity or pH when changing your hot tub or spa water every 3 to 4 months.

Testing your alkalinity is easy and can be done with any number of kits or test strips. Do to the buffering effect that alkalinity has on pH, it’s recommended that you make sure your water is in the 80 to 120 ppm range before adjusting your pH.
